The words you see above are part of a quote from God in Revelation 21:5. God finished His revelation to the apostle John by telling John to write about some of the marvelous things that await His faithful people in eternity. These are the words that immediately precede the quote above.
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:1-4)
This is a fantastic message of God to us! It is exciting to think about being in the presence of God and to receive the kind of direct loving care from Him that is shown here. It is obvious that God refers to what He is going to do for His people in Heaven with the quote in verse 5. But the New Testament is clear that God wants His people to enjoy the blessings of faith in this life while we look forward to eternal life. Here are some passages that demonstrate God’s desire for us now.
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. (John 10:27-28)
Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in our hope of sharing the glory of God. (Romans 5:1-2)
Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?” (Hebrews 13:5-6)
Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 1:10-11)
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. (1 John 5:13)
God definitely wants to bless us in eternity but also remember that God wants us to be blessed and encouraged right now. Rejoice and be glad!
